one twin has heterochromia

Over the Christmas holiday while at the in-laws', Daddy noticed that Thing 2 also has heterochromia (right eye). It doesn't cover as much of her eye as Curious George's though. Of course we had to check Thing 1 to see if she has it, being identical and all. But Thing 2's eyes are evenly colored. We then looked at all the photos from when they were born. I found discoloration on Thing 2's eye as early as 4 months old. Daddy and I then became obsessed by the topic and searched the internet. Having 2 out of 3 kids with sectoral heterochromia clearly suggests a genetic component. Why Thing 1 doesn't have it isn't really a mystery anymore since there are a lot of genetic studies saying identical twins don't exactly have the same genes. The zygosity DNA testing we had done when they were infants said the girls are identical twins, but of course there are factors that affect gene expression.

Anyway, I told Daddy that it is highly unlikely the heterochromia came from my side of the family. Being Filipino, the variation in eye color in my family only goes from minute differences of brown. We found a picture on the internet of someone with central heterochromia and to me it looked exactly like Daddy's eyes (his eyes are hazel). So I suggested I take a picture of them. Then while we were all curious, I took pictures of Nana and Papaw's eyes (they both have hazel eyes). It seems their hazel eyes may very well be central heterochromia (they are yellowish in the center).

Thing 2's right eye. The discoloration is at 9 o'clock and it's small. We've missed it this long since it just looks like glare on pictures. The discoloration looks greenish, but Daddy says it's a lighter shade of brown.

While on the topic, here is Daddy's right eye. It is hazel with a yellowish/goldish ring in the center.

And for those who are curious as to what possible eye color offspring results when a dark brown-eyed asian gal gets it on with a hazel-eyed caucasian man, here is my eye.

Our little man's heterochromia is here. Thing 1's eyes is exactly the same color as Thing 2's (without the discoloration).

Is it sectoral heterochromia?

This is the little man's left eye. Look closely. Do you see anything different? Do you see the darker area on the lower left quadrant of his eye?

This is his right eye for comparison.

While waiting in line for one of the rides in Water Country USA, I noticed something in the little man's left eye. I thought it was a shadow, so I changed our position and looked, yet it was still there. It freaked me out. I asked Daddy to look at it and he casually said, "Oh yeah, I noticed that a few months ago but you weren't home so I forgot to tell you."

When we came home, he researched it online and found the term, sectoral heterochromia. It certainly does look like it. And then he searched all our pictures and sure enough, Daddy found it on picture as early as 1 year old. How could we not have noticed it before?? Though certainly, having had this for so long and not had any other symptom is a good thing. The girls have their 15 month old check next week, so I may casually ask the pediatrician about it then.

Once in a while, the twins do get out of the play yard. :-) And today, Thing 2 uses her time to practice taking steps. I tried to let Thing 1 do the same, but she was too afraid of falling. Notice how her hair stick out all over the place?

This is before Thing 2's bath (taken this morning after dropping off big brother at school).



And this is what happens after the bath, after all the dirt and grime gets washed away. (Her car seat now faces forward!)



By the way, this is a partial evil eye. The camera was too slow to catch the whole thing.

After 5 weeks of going to physical therapy twice a week, the girls have become very familiar with the routine. Once I get called, Thing 1 twists around (she sits in front) to see where I keep the crackers and when I don't hand it fast enough, she gets very vocal. And quite loudly I might add.

Everyone in there loves these two, even the patients. Thing 1 continuously chit-chats with everyone and cries when she's out of crackers. Thing 2 took a while to start smiling, but today she did finally start. But one of the therapist 'over stayed' her welcome in talking to them (she said because Thing 1 was enjoying the conversation so much!) and Thing 2 started crying for me. She couldn't see me right away because I was paying so it made her cry even worse. After that, she gave the therapist the evil eye. Oooh, she gets Mommy's evil eye look down pat.

The nice therapist felt shamed, but I think I made her feel better when I told her even I get the evil eye. :-) But then I ran out of crackers. GASP! Now the nice lady happened to have graham crackers so she gave the girls some. Of course they stop crying. We'll see if the lady is now Thing 2's best friend on my next appointment.

Is it evil eye or evil eyeS? There are 2 eyes, after all. Oh well.

The Twin Test

Okay the wife doesn't see the humor in testing if you can tell the twins apart. By twins, I am referring to our daughters not anything else. So here is the test, above is a set of 3 pictures of just the eyes of our daughters, and yes there is at least one picture of each. So the test is, which pics are of the same twin, i.e. is A & C the same etc. If you are a grandparent I expect you to use names, or else.
